Chilean Flamingo

Animal Characteristics

Head-Body Length:110 cm
Identification:The Chilean flamingo is pale pink with bright vermilion wings. The primaries and secondaries are black. The Chilean flamingo also has a black downward-curved bill with a yellow base and blue legs with red tarsal joints.
Habitat:Lakes, muddy seacoasts
Diet:Carnivore: small invertebrates, plankton
Reproduction:Males begin displaying to attract mates in October and continue through December. They are colonial nesters, laying one (rarely two) eggs in a raised bowl of mud. The chicks fledge in February or March.
Social Structure:Flock sizes can vary from ten birds up into the thousands.
Behavior:Chilean flamingos can often be seen standing on one foot in shallow water. They migrate from May to September.
